Autumn Meet - 1st October - Surlingham Ferry - Report

Lovely weekend with a good turnout of 14 Boats on the Friday, and a further 3 on Saturday plus 2 cars.  39 members and guests sat down early in the evening for more of Sonia’s fine hospitality.

The weather was lovely and sunny for most of the weekend, dry, except for heavy rain and driving winds on the Friday night.

Friday

Foggy start to the day, but with strong winds and rain threatening later, club boats were in and moored up by lunchtime, Most members then sat outside in the afternoon sun, chatting and drinking, before some members going over to the pub for early dinner. Lovely meals as usual, but we came out around 9pm to torrential rain and driving winds, so it was a quick dash to our boats and an early night for most.

Saturday

A lovely clear day, a little cooler but a sunny afternoon. Winds picked up Southerly later, and there was a very high afternoon tide – flooding areas round the side-on moored boats.

No dramas this time, unlike he Saturday morning of our Spring opening season event!

After a late breakfast, we settled down sitting outside on the picnic tables, chatting over cups of coffee, before getting the drinks in for the afternoon. A few more boats arrived during Saturday, and they were helped in OK.

After more drinks outside, we went back to our boats to prepare for the evening dinner in the pub.

We went over early this time, before 6pm, and Sonia and her team once again busied themselves serving up the meals and ensuring that we were well looked after. Always great pub grub in the Ferry House, and plenty of it! We finished our meals before 8.30pm, and Bim and John began playing straight away – going on to nearly 12 midnight with only a few short breaks. A great performance, plenty of pub singing and clapping and even a few members dancing the night away. Other pub clientele and staff joined in later, as members began to drift back to their boats before 11pm.

Sunday

Another lovely sunny start with light winds, and this continued into the afternoon with blue skies and more warm sunshine. We said cheerio and bon voyage to several club boats that cast off before and around lunchtime, but 6 of us remained another night. That Sunday afternoon, members gathered outside once more for drinks and a chat.

It had been another good club weekend.

Next event is the Laying-up Buffet Dance at Beccles, the Fox & Hounds Social Club – 22nd.October, 7pm onwards.

POST-MEETING NOTE

Around 20 Club members suffered from an outbreak of Covid following the weekend’s event, but for most it was not severe, and the majority are now OK, and testing negative once more.

Let us hope that it is the first and last time that a club event is affected by the virus.
